What should you write in a wedding guest book?
The Fotelya team ·
A good message has three parts: a feeling or a memory you share with the couple, a wish for their future, then your name, plus how you know them if they don't know you well. Two to four sentences are enough: a sincere, personal line means more than a long quote.
The three-part structure
- The feeling or the memory: what you felt during the day, or a story you shared with one of the couple.
- The wish: what you hope for them from here on.
- The signature: your first name, and how you know the couple if they don't know you well. In twenty years, “Martine, Julien's godmother” will mean more than an initial.
Message examples
Heartfelt
- “Watching you say yes today felt like watching two people I love become obvious together. Wishing you a life as bright as this day.”
- “Thank you for letting us share this moment. May your love always keep the feeling of this first day.”
- “I have known you for years, and I have never seen you this happy. Stay just like this.”
Funny
- “After years of debating pizza or sushi, you have finally made a decision for life. Well done!”
- “Friendly reminder: the dishwasher gets emptied by two. So does everything else. Congratulations!”
- “You said yes in front of witnesses. No backing out now. Congratulations!”
Short
- “Wishing you every happiness, today and every day after.”
- “Thank you for a magical day. Long live the newlyweds!”
- “May your story be long, beautiful and full of laughter.”
From family
- “We watched each of you grow up; today we get to watch you build something together. We could not be happier for you.”
- “Welcome to the family! We could not have wished for anyone better.”
When you barely know the couple
- “Thank you for having us on your beautiful day. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness. Paul and Lea, friends of Camille.”
Things to avoid
- References to past relationships.
- Jokes that only your table will get.
- Relationship advice nobody asked for.
- Unreadable handwriting: write slowly, the couple will reread these pages for years.
A guest book with photos and voices
With Fotelya, the guest book also lives on the phone: each guest leaves a written message from the album, with no account, right next to their photos. The Premium plan adds an audio guest book, so you keep their voices and their laughter. The written guest book is included in every plan, even the free one.
Related questions
What should the first page of a guest book say?
A short note from the couple inviting people to write, for example: “A word, a memory, a wish: this book will keep your messages for years to come. Thank you for being here.”
Should you sign your guest book message?
Yes, with your first name, and how you know the couple if they don't know you well, so they know who wrote it even years later.
What do parents write in a wedding guest book?
Something only they can say: a childhood memory, pride in who their child has become, a welcome for their new son-in-law or daughter-in-law. One or two sentences carry more than a long speech.
