How many photos can you send in one email?

Only a handful. Gmail and Outlook.com limit a message to 25 MB, attachments included. A 12-megapixel smartphone photo weighs about 2 to 3 MB in the iPhone's HEIC format and 5 to 6 MB as a JPEG: expect 6 to 12 HEIC photos, or 3 to 5 JPEGs, per email. Beyond that, a sharing link beats an attachment.

These limits apply to personal accounts: for work or school accounts, the administrator sets them, Google notes.
The math for photos
A photo from a 12-megapixel smartphone weighs about 2 to 3 MB in HEIC, the iPhone's format, versus 5 to 6 MB as a JPEG. In theory, 25 MB holds 8 to 12 HEIC photos, or 4 to 5 JPEGs.
In practice, a little less: to travel by email, attachments are base64-encoded, which adds roughly a third to their size. Depending on how the provider counts, that brings you down to 6 to 9 HEIC photos, or about 3 JPEGs. Hence the cautious range above.
To send lots of photos
- Your email's own sharing link: Google Drive from Gmail, OneDrive from Outlook.com, Mail Drop from Apple Mail.
- A file transfer service such as WeTransfer or SwissTransfer, for a one-off send to one person.
- For party photos taken by every guest, a shared album where each person adds their own: nobody has to email anything.
Shrinking the photos lets you attach more at the cost of quality: keep that for photos that will only ever be seen on a screen.
What if your guests have the photos?
